Happy Black History Month! I haven’t wished you that all month. I’ve shared small cultural tidbits on Instagram. And then I pondered…what good is a Fashionista if I can’t provide my take??
May I put a few things on the table?
This whole thought hit me Saturday night. There was no time to buy or have anything designed. I marched into my closet. Every piece of Tribal, African, Dashiki like clothing I owned was pulled out. And the challenge was On!
How to repurpose or restyle a look from highly rotated garments???
-I first noticed the length of my skirts and considered one as perhaps a dress.
-It is “Winter” in Virginia, I thought it appropriate to dress for the season.
My Mom has many pieces of African printed waxed material. I happen to have had this in the closet. Every since I went Natural 12 years ago, I practiced tying turbans and wraps. I thought that a beautiful finishing touch, would be to add a brooch similar to my Chanel Brooch.
My collarless blouse is by Tawni Haynes. The “Dress” is actually a skirt by Demistks New York. In order to transition the waistband, I wore a gold chain belt that had tassels on the end. Since more shape was needed, I wore a crinoline skirt for a petticoat, length, and character. My finishing touch to gather my waistline, a matching bow belt.
A pair of Burberry platforms, a Celine thrown in for the love if it, a Chanel Brooch for good measure, a Betsey Johnson wrap around crystal choker and Tights from Walmart because it works…. there you have it!! Deep in my heart it’s my version of the Nubian Betsey Johnson.
I’d love to see how you repurpose your own closet. Always know, your worth is beyond words. You’re Royalty!
Always wear your crown.
Until next time,
P.S., for the love of it, Jeff joined me his looks are also below!
